A Chocolate Candy Bar Can Help You Pass Your Exams

Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was a Russian physiologist, psychologist, and physician and a Nobel Prize winner who used dogs as experimental subjects for the phenomenon of classical conditioning. He taught dogs to associate the ringing of a bell with feeding time. When the bell rang the dogs would start to salivate. Pavlov’s study was the first major breakthrough in how our brain works.

Our memory works on the same principle. We can be taught to associate things to remember, such as when studying for an exam. You can, in fact, use chocolate candy bars to help you get better grades on an exam or just better grades in general. How? The smell and taste of a chocolate bar is such a strong one that it can be used as a mental marker to help you remember things you normally wouldn't.

Have you ever had a memory from your childhood pop into your brain when you passed a bakery shop and smelled the chocolate cookies baking? This is called associative recall. You associate the smell of chocolate cookies baking with the memory of maybe your mom or grandmother baking cookies when you were growing up. The smell is so great that is forces your brain to recall not only the smell but the images and word of that memory. Using a chocolate bar for studying will help with your recall.

For example, if you’re studying for a math exam and you have to remember the Pythagorean Theorem but it just won’t stick in your brain. Eating a chocolate bar while studying will help you remember the theorem when taking your exam. While taking the exam keep a chocolate bar handy to help you remember. The smell of the chocolate brings you right back to the day before when you were staring at that theorem. Suddenly, the smell of the chocolate will give you a mental reminder of the theorem you were studying the day before and you will pass your exam.

The reason chocolate works so well is it has such a strong and distinctive smell your brain will kick in when you smell it during the exam. Whether it’s white or dark chocolate it’s the smell that will jump start your brain into remembering.

You can do this with any type of fruit, herbs, candle, incense or food. However, lighting up a candle or incense during an exam might be frowned upon. The same goes for bringing in a bowl of spaghetti loaded with garlic. It may work while studying but it won’t go over very will in class. As with the dogs in Pavlov’s study you should use the same smell every time you study so your brain is conditioned to the smell.

As with anything, eating too much chocolate or too much of anything will cause you to gain weight. Sometimes using the wrapper or a scratch and sniff sticker is enough to help your brain start remembering what you need to pass your exam.

What If Your Doctor Said You Have To Eat Chocolate Everyday?

Chocolate is loaded with antioxidants that are good for you. Eaten in moderation, it can make you healthier. Eating a whole box of chocolates is a chocolate lovers dream but it will increase your blood sugar and put those nasty calories on your stomach and thighs where you don’t want them.

Mother Nature created all our plants to keep us healthy, wealthy and wise but she didn’t count on people going overboard on the quantity we can consume. Nor did she take into the account what manufactures would put into our favorite delights. So it’s up to us to take things in moderation such as chocolate, exercise and sex.

Chocolate can give your brain a boost, like a high sort of feeling, when it releases its chemical compound into it. The chemical compound of chocolate creates endorphins in your brain that make you feel good. Endorphins are natural hormones that act as pain-killers and "happy makers". The scientific name is endogenous opioid polypeptide compounds. They are produced by your pituitary gland when ever you exercise, eat certain foods or have sex (that’s great, huh?).

Chocolate also gives you a psychological high. Everything will be alright if I just have this chocolate bar...isn’t that what you tell yourself? Of course you do, we all do. When you’re feeling down a bite of chocolate will make you feel better. But that whole box of chocolate cookies won’t do anything but raise your blood sugar and then let you down in 30 minutes later.

There are some that say you shouldn’t eat chocolate but once a week and that’s if you exercise everyday or if you’re on a diet. However, some of the studies done recently have shown that a bit a chocolate everyday is good for you. Like everything else in life it should be done in moderation. A little bit goes a long way.

When you crave chocolate your body is telling you something. Only you can say what that something is. It might be your blood sugar is too high due to overeating or too many sodas. It might be you need the endorphins or the vitamins and mineral in chocolate. When you crave chocolate, before you grab and eat, mentally check your body to see why it’s craving chocolate. Sometimes taking a little bit of sweet, like sugar, on the tip of your finger and put it on the tip of your tongue will fool your body and the craving will go away.

Whether it's as a treat or it's something you do to reward yourself, chocolate can help you feel better and it can help you get healthier. As long as you keep your eating to a minimum, you shouldn't have to swear off chocolate forever, even if you're on a diet.
